Tips for Better Closet Organization
In most homes, the closets are the least organized places in the house. Though these spaces are used daily, we tend to not spend much time tidying our closets and neatly putting everything in its place. If you’d like to make your closet work better for you, here are some tips for closet organization.
Begin Closet Organization by Decluttering
It is tough to organize well when you have clutter. The first step is to get rid of all the stuff you don’t need, want, or haven’t used in the past year. Don’t waste time attempting to sell items you’re not keeping or you’ll never get around to actually organizing. Instead, sort your belongings by category and determine what you can give to a friend, donate, or throw in the trash.
It’s all About Hangers
If you’re short on space, one of the biggest hurdles to good closet organization is the types of hangers you use. Hangers of different shapes and sizes take up more space. Invest in high-quality hangers that match. These will be better for your clothes and will give you additional space for hanging items.
Labels Are Helpful for Closet Organization
One of the reasons closets become disorganized is because we don’t take time to properly put things away. To keep a well-organized closet, your belongings need a specific place where they are returned to after each use. Some items will be on hangers. Others may need to be stored in baskets or bins inside of the closet. Label your bins so you’re always certain of where things belong.
Store Out-of-Season Items Elsewhere
Out-of-season clothing can take up a lot of real estate in your closet. Save this space for items you use regularly. During the summer months, store jackets, gloves, winter hats, and scarves elsewhere. You might have plastic bins or a cedar chest where you can keep them until next season. You’ll free up a lot of space for the clothes and accessories you are currently wearing.
